The 5 Most Common Kitchen Design Mistakes

Have you been thinking about doing a bit of remodeling lately? If so, one room that you should definitely consider putting on the top of décor list is your kitchen. The main reason is because should you ever decide to put your house on the market, being that a nice kitchen is a “top selling point” for any home, by making certain kinds of upgrades, it could raise your property’s value. Plus, it can help your house to sell much faster too.

However, before you get started on all of your design ideas, we wanted to provide you with a list of some of the most common kitchen design mistakes people make. That way, you can know what to avoid, which can ultimately save you time, effort and a few dollars too.

Not having enough countertop space. Something that is a “must have” for kitchens is enough countertop space. So, as you’re coming up with how you want your kitchen to look, it’s a good idea to come up with as much horizontal surface space as you can. Also, try and avoid putting any appliances on the counters that are not used on a daily basis.

Bad ventilation. Without question, amidst all of the cooking and “people traffic”, it can get pretty humid in your kitchen area. Yet some people do not even think about what they can do to increase ventilation. If you can afford to put in a sliding door, that would be awesome. If not, at least make sure there are new screens in your windows so that you can open them up and that you put a ceiling fan over your kitchen table too.

Poor lighting. You definitely need to be able to see what you’re doing in the kitchen. However, sometimes people are so caught up in the design of the kitchen that they pick colors that absorb light rather than reflect it. If you are going to paint your kitchen, use colors like white or yellow. As for putting in light fixtures, scones and chandeliers are always a nice touch.

No adequate space. Have you ever been in a kitchen that has a state-of the-art stove, custom kitchen cabinets and a beautiful-looking island, only to discover that if more than one person is in it at a time, it can be pretty hard to get around? Out of all of the kitchen design mistakes that we mentioned, perhaps the biggest one of all is having some great décor ideas without implementing enough space for the people who will be occupying the kitchen in the first place. This is actually one of the main reasons why you might want to hire a contractor to at least consult you on your kitchen design plan before you get started.

Being way too trendy. And finally, be sure not to design a kitchen that is too trendy-looking. Although there might be certain bold colors and radical-looking fixtures that you might like, again, should you ever choose to sell your house, your real estate agent is probably going to suggest that you remodel the space before putting it on the market. This means that you’ll be spending more money. Therefore, choose something that is a bit more classic with accessories that represent your signature style. That way, you’ll have less to think about around moving time, plus you can take the kitchen accessories with you to your new house.
